Twitter Launches Local Trends Feature

Find out what interests people in your area

At this moment, a whole lot of Apple-related terms ("Apple Tablet," "#apple," "Frantic Steve Jobs," "iSlate," and "iTablet") are among the top trending topics on Twitter.  And mentions of them might get a small business noticed.  Only not everyone's equally fascinated by the idea of a tablet PC from Apple, and so businesses might do better using a new feature called Local Trends.

Twitter LogoA post on the Twitter Blog announced late yesterday, "Last week we began to slowly roll out a new feature called Local Trends to expose what people are talking about on the state and city level, and today we've fully launched so everyone can use it."

The post then explained, "The big events that come up around the world will always become a global conversation, but what about the big events that only happen in your world that only matter to those around you? . . . .  Local Trends will allow you to learn more about the nuances in our world and discover even more relevant topics that might matter to you."

Since not all small businesses can count on (or are even trying to get) customers from different parts of the country or globe, Local Trends should help them better engage with people who live within a small area.

Local Trends might even prove useful to businesses that don't have active Twitter accounts, since the information supplied there can be used to fuel posts on Facebook, updates on a website, or articles in a newsletter.

Lost On Twitter

Great article on local trends in Twitter.  And that part about Apple apps was most enlightening. One question, though; what are you talking about?

Obviously, the problem is with me and my lack of understand about how to use twitter to better serve my small business.  The only thing I do now is post updates to tell people that I have a new blog posting. I only have about 100 followers so I'm not exactly deluged with Web traffic when I do this.

I wish there was somewhere on the Internet that I could learn more tricks... or tips... or Whatever on how to use my twitter account to find and communicate with people looking for the services I provide.  Right now the best thing about my twitter account is I can tell people "Yea, I'm on twitter".

Anyone with any advice -and I do mean ANY advice- for me would be most appreciated.  God bless.

Local Trend is a great

Local Trend is a great feature for local businesses and possibly ecommerce that understands the concept. Or, maybe their product or services covers both naturally like in the paint coat industry.

It's a small world after all

'Cos in twitter land, unless you're USA or UK based, apparently you just belong to 'worldwide'.  Hmmmm

Twitter Local Trends

It stands to reason that the personal relevance for trending topics will be inversely proportional to the size and volume of the aggregated input, which means the value is diminished as Twitter gets more popular.
