Online Businesses
Hi Chris: Thanks for the great article. I am wondering about businesses that operate the same way Google does, that is, 100% online. It would be a shame to disadvantage quality online business owners by not having them come up on the IPhones as a favorite place. Do you have any information about this? I have included the web site of my favorite hobby shop, ToysPeriod, as an example of a business that I would want to come up on my IPhone if I were searching for Lego or model train products. However, they have no brick and mortar store, which is the whole idea of the online community in the first place.

ToysPeriod is a leading online shop specializing in lego sets and model railroad equipment.
Barcodes
Sounds like the mark of the beast.
Barcodes
I don't have a brick and mortor store for www.morganservice.net so I suppose it doesn't really apply in my case.
Customer Service
This sounds like a good idea in principal. But this is such a brand new system with the reviews and all.
I have recently witnessed a website dump hundreds if not thousands of reviews into Google local and they were dumped incorrectly. All the ratings went in with 1 star.
As you can imagine, several of my clients had rave reviews but when listed next to their competitors they were 1 star in comparison. At first I thought I was working for a bad client, but in truth, the system is just flawed and those ratings were dumped into Google reviews incorrectly.
I don't think it's good idea to move forward with this until Google offers some sort of quality control. I mean hundreds if not thousands of business were effected and to my knowledge nobody knew it was happening except me. Either that or they can't fix it and other people have contacted to have the problem fixed prior to me finding it. Which I think is the more likely case, in which case, I think it would be better to wait until customer service is in place properly.
Barcode Usefulness
I received on of those stickers and have placed it in my window. I really don't know how useful it will be and especially as not one client coming in the door has commented on it. Even with that, I still think it is a novel idea and is just fun having it there!
Quick Update
Re
A patent application assigned to Google was published today which provides a fair amount of detail on how a system like this might work, and goes beyond the use of barcodes for businesses to include parks, government buildings, attractions, and landmarks, as seen in the image above from the patent filing.
