Using Facebook Because That's Where People Are

Consultant Drives 90% of Her Business from Facebook

In my last article, I asked, "Is Facebook as important to your strategy as Google?" Whether your answer to this is yes or no, there are a variety of reasons why Facebook can be a useful part of your mix. I was looking at an article I wrote about a year ago about driving traffic to your site with Facebook, and I noticed a comment left last month that tells an interesting story.

Allow me to pull an excerpt from the comment. A consultant named Heather O'Sullivan Canney talked about the reasons she created a Facebook page and why it has helped her business:

As a result (IMO) of creating the page with the INTENTION of engaging and not merely as an advertising platform, I now receive nearly 90% of my business via facebook. Even those who I know personally in my local market, and network with on a daily basis, hire me as a result. They often say "I didn't really think I needed you, but I was sitting there stressing out about my marketing plan and there you were..." (or something along those lines).

I don't sell internet marketing products Chris, although as my international fan base continues to grow as a result of facebook, I am being asked to create online products.

The key (IMO) is having the intention of building a community, and engaging with them. Nobody wants another place to be advertised to in the 'in your face' sense of the word. We want to buy things, and we need to know that they exist, but we want to buy - not 'be sold to'.

Let's not get too consumed in the Facebook vs. Google aspect. It is an interesting discussion, but there are no rules (luckily) saying you have to use one and not the other. They are both your friends. And they both provide different ways of getting your business and your message found by potential customers.

As long as I've brought it up,however, Facebook does appear to be coming quite the competitor to Google. This week, Nielsen shared some data about time spent online by U.S. Internet users, and the average Facebook user spends about seven hours a month on Facebook. The average Google users spends about two.

It is true that you don't have to spend much time on Google if it is doing its job right (at least with regards to the search engine), but the fact that  Facebook is where people already are for that amount of time says a lot about its potential. On top of that, Facebook continues to find new ways of keeping users around even more. I discuss this at length here.

Is Facebook a waste of time? It can be, but not to everyone. It's how you use it. As I mentioned in a comment on the article I linked to above, you can waste a lot of time on Google too. It comes down to personal discipline.

I don't Think so

Facebook vs Google aside - theres nothing more poignant then a stunning social media campaign! eheh I hate that word

Search vs Social

The difference between having a Website and being listed on a Search engine is very different from participating in a Forum, Social Circle, or even the Classifieds.

Communities will always be in threat of "drying up", that is the only real risk as far as I see it. There is a high risk of time spent evaporating when the people move to a different venue.

With Facebook. Maybe 1-3 years from now it will lose traffic at the rate that MySpace has.

With Google, Maybe Google will be the next Yahoo in 2-10 years time?

Search is not Google. I believe Search will always have a solid footing as far as a passive means to push your brand message, information or product to customers.

I think the important thing

I think the important thing to do is take advantage of what's 'hot' but concentrate on the long haul.  Search will always be there no matter what.  Facebook is great for now and should be used while it's at its peak.  The strategy should be to grow your customer base using Facebook and once you have your customers in hand, they will go with you whether FB crashes or not.

As well as, not instead of

I know individuals who spend a large bulk of their day on Facebook. When something happens within their "circle" they know about it right away, When another individual "recommend" or mentions an article, product, service, or event - they check it out and continue the conversation. Facebook has become a national community of gossip, recommendations, questions and answers, and real time research.

I personally maintain the opinion that Facebook is a waste of my day, and a waste of productive time, but that does not stop me from highly recommending not only a facebook presence, but an ACTIVE facebook presence.

Bottom line: your customers are on Facebook.

Next: The search engines are starting to pull search results from the social media databases. Get into it now. Create your brand - your voice - your "presence", and in about a year from now you will be poised to be a part of those "Social Results"

It is for this reason that we (WebXsposure Design Studios) have added a component to all of our website builts that automatically "pings" up to about 50 social media (facebook, linkedin, twitter, plaxo, posterous, yammer, etc. etc.) with every addition or update to the website.

It's here to stay and growing every day (Google Buzz hits over 9 million coments in well under a week), so either become a part of it, or watch the masses pass you by.

For perhaps the first time ever, social networking sites have surpassed the traffic search engines receive.

Is Facebook A Waste Of Time?

I agree Chris, it does come down to personal discipline.  You must make time daily for Social Media, but not ALL day.  Ask the question:  What do I expect to accomplish using Social Media?  What are my goals?  If you have a clear defined purpose that is realistic, it can work for you and your business.

It is not all about ads as was mentioned or selling to your Friends and Fans, it is about providing content that is useful, becoming an authority figure in your field of business.  If you only have a Personal Facebook page, you should also develop one for your business so you can differentiate the two.  Provide content specific to both.

I use many Social Media tools, Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitter and now Buzz.  I post a little each day on some and weekly on others.  You have to keep your content fresh, but not overwhelming.

Interesting Perspective on Social vs. Business Use

I saw this intresting post on another blog.  The lines of work and home are blurred.  Facebook can be used for IT purposes.

Seth Godin coined the term

Seth Godin coined the term "permission marketing" this is where the visitor is allowing you to tell them about your product or service. Versus "interruption marketing" is where you're throwing your sales pitch to everyone that you meet. So yes, engaging in the community is the best approach, may not be the quickest way, but in the long run after the clouds have settled. Your brand is there for people to see!
