Business Twitter Accounts May Be On The Way

Expectations rising as Chirp conference approaches

By all accounts, Twitter CEO Evan Williams's keynote at the SXSW conference was a failure.  He and interviewer Umair Haque so failed to hold people's attention that a large portion of the audience even walked out before it was finished.  But now, hopes are high that Twitter will make up for the snoozefest by announcing commercial accounts next month.

Twitter LogoThe expectation that Williams would say something about Twitter accounts for businesses - and the fact that he didn't - is indeed the reason a lot of people gave up on his SXSW speech.  Rumors had indicated a declaration about them would be made.

Now there's speculation the news will hit at Chirp, "The Official Twitter Developer Conference."  Kim-Mai Cutler observed today, "Twitter's head of product management and monetization, Anamitra Banerji, will be leading a session on commercial accounts in the afternoon at the conference."  And "Twitter COO Dick Costolo will also be giving a speech on monetization strategy . . ."

Then here's one more hint: Evan Williams will be back on stage, too.

Small business owners should give some thought to whether they'd like to receive more information about who views their tweets, who retweets them, and other things that Twitter might provide to users of business accounts.  It'll also be necessary to consider whether looking more professional is worth some money.

Chirp is scheduled to take place on April 14th and 15th, so stay tuned.

Information about who is reading Tweets could be helpful. How about who is following on their cellphones.

Kinda trite...

Twitter doesn't really DO much in the first place... so when it's CEO comes to the largest music festival in the world to speak, it better be good... the fact he didn't realize this, hallmarks the first step towards the typical line of mistakes that megacorporations usually make with their customers.

Twitter isn't really a "good product"... it's just something the world chose to use for the time being (it's ICQ that everyone can see - wait, do you still have ICQ installed???)... just like MySpace played-out, I think it's time is limited.

On the other hand, Facebook really appears to have the most valid model for long-term use by children, parents, groups... and ultimately businesses (because children, parents and groups will always be using it)!

Facebook isn't CUTE (but it's fun) and it's the Phoenix of MySpace (robust, without the mistakes of that platform)... that's likely why it will keep a positive lasting impression that doesn't fade easily... Twitter, Tweeting, Twinking, Twirp, Twetarded, and all the rest of it, will be the downfall of another overhyped tech company... my, how quickly we forget the past... we love to make the same mistakes twice.

Also, it might be hard to tease out who is using the service professionally and who is using it for personal reasons, and then charge them for it.
