March Employment Numbers Reflect No Cuts

Possible inflection point on path to hiring more workers

According to the latest information from the National Federation of Independent Business, small businesses have finally reached a point at which further job cuts proved unnecessary.  March in fact seemed to act as a break-even point.

NFIBWilliam Dunkelberg, the NFIB's chief economist, explained in a statement, "The average loss in jobs per firm continued to decline in March, hitting the zero line. Small business owners reported a seasonally adjusted change in average employment per firm of 0 workers during the prior three months (seasonally adjusted), a huge improvement from the January reading of negative .52 workers per firm."

As for what's supposed to happen next, it looks like small businesses will add a few workers as a group.  Dunkelberg said, "Not seasonally adjusted, 15 percent plan to increase the total number of people working for them, while 7 percent plan workforce reductions."

So we're seeing good (though admittedly not great) news all around with respect to jobs.  And that probably implies a lot about other factors, since employees tend to get paid with money and not IOUs.

Keep your fingers crossed that these trends continue.
