Study: Online Video Ads Not Testing Viewers' Patience


People may be unusually receptive to ads in online clips

As you've surely noticed, television ads serve a lot of purposes not intended by advertisers, giving people the perfect opportunity to grab a snack, use the restroom, or check out a couple minutes of Antiques Roadshow.  But people haven't hit their limit in terms of ads in online videos, according to data from comScore.

comScore gave around 1,800 U.S. Internet users a survey "designed to assess the levels of advertising (based on one minute increments from 0-15 minutes) viewers would tolerate when watching one hour of TV programming on the Internet."

Then here's the key finding, as expressed in a press release: "online advertising's 'sweet spot' is between 6 and 7 minutes per hour, substantially higher than the approximately 4 minutes per hour that is currently consumed by ads delivered online as part of TV content."

So as YouTube and other outfits make it easier and easier for small businesses to deliver a message before, during, or after a video, companies that take them up on the offer may realize significant benefits.

Fair warning, though: food and the restroom can just as easily call people away from their computers, and advertisers also have to worry about individuals checking their email or playing a game in another window.
