Report: Most Small Businesses Still Not Sold on Social Media

Many Businesses Still Ignoring Social Networks

Citibank put out a new report indicating that most small businesses still are not leveraging the social media tools available to them, despite the "relentless buzz" around them.

Are you ignoring social media?
Tell us why.

According to the survey of 552 small business executives across the United States, in the last year 37% of small businesses haven't used a Web site for marketing or expanding their business and 84% have not used ecommerce to sell their products or services. 62% aren’t using basic email for marketing their business.  Yet among those businesses that do have a Web site, 74% say their site has been effective at generating more business.

"Many small businesses today have yet to really harness the marketing and communication power that online tools can provide them," says Raj Seshadri, the head of Small Business Banking at Citibank. "Our survey reveals a huge opportunity for many businesses to begin using some of the basic online tools, such as email marketing, to drive their sales."

65% of small businesses are not placing online ads to expand their business and 67% have not used search engine optimization, according to the survey.

Other Noteworthy findings include:

- 72 percent say they are likely to use a Web site for marketing or expanding their business in the next 12 months - up 14% from those who do today.

- 24 percent will likely use ecommerce to sell their products or services online over the next 12 months – up 50% from those who do today.

- 30 percent say they intend to use social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter for marketing or expanding their business – up 58% from those who do today.

"This survey shows that many small businesses have yet to add new tools to traditional marketing methods that they have found effective in the past," said Seshadri. "This may be because the online world does not fit their business model or other factors such as inexperience with technology or lack of time to effectively enter these marketing channels.  It's encouraging, however, to see that many intend to utilize more of these tools in the next 12 months."

According to Citibank, there is a disconnect regarding the importance placed on word-of-mouth marketing by small businesses.  63% say word-of-mouth marketing is the most effective way to market their business and find new customers, but interestingly many don't view social media as a word-of-mouth channel. 81% say they have not used social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.

Among those not using social media sites, 47% don't think these networks have value to their business. 21% think they're more for personal than business use, and 18% don't know enough about how to use them.

Michael Stelzner, founder of SocialMediaExaminer.com released another interesting report this week, finding that 22% of marketers were just getting started with social media marketing and another 43% had only been doing it for a few months.

Do They Network?

I would ask one question to the Non-believers:  Do you Network or build business relationships in your community through your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Lions Club or other avenue?  If your answer is yes, you should be using Social Media at minimum, in the same way.

Why Use Social Media?

In my local market, for my and my wife's therapy practice, I use Facebook, a blog, twitter, and youtube, to rank number one for search terms relevant to our market.  Admittedly, it takes a bit of time to set up your social media so that a post to the blog or FB or twitter updates the others at the same time, but once done, I can get that out of the way early in the day, and I rank ahead of all the local practices who have paid a web builder to build a site, and I also rank ahead of the Psychology Today and Theravives of the world, so someone who has had a spat with hubby or wife and looks online for rockford counseling will see my Google Local ad at #9 today, and the Logan Counseling link at number one in Google general search.   We measure effectiveness in terms of clients to my wife.  One client in her therapy practice can be very lucrative, and over a year there will be more than one who finds us online.  You do need a system though, which is where a social media expert may come in, because you can spend all day fooling around on FB or Twitter without some discipline. Could be a couple factors there hampering small businesses. First would be time and manpower.

How many social networks should one belong to? And then, the time to maintain them.

Remember these are "Small" businesses that may not have the resources they need, you know a Marketing Dept. or even the capability to pay some one to perform this. I doubt CitiBank has this problem.

Then there's the person who got "Volunteered" because their Boss found out they know how to turn on a Computer. So having to do their normal everyday job that person has to find time to be "Social".

It's a lot of work in itself.

 i belong to most social media's and new ones are coming out all the time; not sure how effective they are; but i am on them or have them all linked up to one another; i.e.: twitter/Facebook/linktIn/Ning network; so when i update one; it posts on all others and i make sure the website of my place of business is in there try and draw in new cliental. i spend the mornings and nights updating; a lot of work but i know the hard work will pay off; but it is tiring and it's my free time i am spending; resorted bring a lap top to work so i can update during down time. Trying to excel and build in any way possible at no cost. times are tough; doing what i have to do; If any one has other suggestions i am open;

Social Media Marketing

All the stats confirm that small businesses realize they need to gain an online presence and need help in understanding how to use social media for their business. They'd do better to focus on a few only such as Facebook and Twitter rather than spread themselves too thin. Facebook is just making leaps and bounds towards creating a social web where small businesses will need to be present and transparaent to create trust and credibility.

Who's buying?

When was the last time you went to Facebook to find a business service? I fail to see that thousands of people all over the world are suddenly going to flock to a business because of it being shown on social media sites. The whole system seems to be a 'must have hype' that makes people believe that social media actually works. Not only does it water down the whole process of finding a business because of the amount of people twittering and tweeting but I believe it to be a time wasting event. Social media traffic is like watching a bus go by on a rainy day, it may have your number on it but it ain't stopping!!!
