Facebook Location Features Will Unlock More Potential for Businesses

Facebook Location Features Coming Soon

We've talked about multiple ways Facebook can help your business online, and that is not limited to online businesses, although selling through Facebook is becoming easier and easier thanks to application developers like Payvment.

Facebook is getting ready to start offering location-sharing features. It's not certain exactly when this will happen, but reports have suggested that it will be before the month is over. Code within Facebook's touchscreen interface has been discovered that will place a "Places" tab on Facebook user profiles.

"This will be the biggest thing to happen to local businesses since paid search," says Ian Schafer at AdAge. "The ability to leverage frequent visits to their locations to passively and actively influence others to do the same, deliver special offers, or redirect local foot traffic at a moment's notice can lead to a direct, measurable impact on in-store sales and word-of-mouth."

If you thought Foursquare had some good opportunities for local businesses, consider that at last count (months ago at this point) Facebook had over 400 million users.

Location sharing is an increasingly growing trend, and is influencing how people access information. It's also playing more of a role in search. With or without search, Facebook participating is a game changer.

Foursquare alone just surpassed 40 million check-ins. I could see Facebook surpassing that in a week.

Let's not forget that Facebook is also sending brick and mortar businesses decals to promote their Facebook pages.

Facebook has been a good way for businesses to engage with their customers in the past, and now there are an increasing number of ways to do this. One app will let you add an actual Support tab to your Page.

Go Go Facebook!

When it comes to promoting business on the web, regardless if it's online online or physical location businesses need to use all the tools in the toolbox. How you use them is even more important!

For example one of our real estate clients is also the lead singer in a band. They use Facebook to expand their reach to locals to come hear them sing. I attended a few of the shows and they are just a bunch of retired guys mostly playing at old town halls, festivals etc.. and they've been doing this forever.

During the intermissions and after the show I was amazed at all of the people who said they learned about it on Facebook and told their friends.

Word of mouth will always be the best, but Facebook helps you take that to the next level as many of the people who show up are retired folks but they bring their families and he passes out his card to everyone he meets.

Watch the show on Youtube  :) it's a packed house!

Facebook location features

Facebook location features basically show that location based services are going to be a strong factor from now on. Along with cloud computing, this is going to be the biggest game changer in the next 5 years.

Great for brick and mortar

This sounds great for those with an acutal store or geographical location but my safety and security store is on line only. Thanks, Chris.

Facebook has finally started to see the power

Facebook has finally realised the power of the community.  I remember when many were asking how can Facebook monetise the business.  It has been obvious for a while and now we are finally seeing Facebook head towards the right business model.  As an example, we have have started advertising with Facebook to publicise translator jobs and are using the pay per click option.  We are using demographics, likes and geographic information to target.

Because people share their personal information in their Facebook posts, the ability to target, not just demographically or geographically, but via recent socio-comments is beyond what many realise.

I know that I have invented the term of socio-comment targeted advertising, but this is the future.  Remember the paradigm shift when there was pay per click advertising with GoTo.com?  We took the step to pay to be in front of people who are actually searching for our products.  Then, we have become a lot more advanced with localisation of advertising.  Imagine the world where we can present locally-based advertising based on an individuals socio-comments.

For example, if I post that I am going to get a hair cut tomorrow.  As a local hairdresser, I can present an ad in front of that person.  This is radical and it does raise questions on privacy, but if the people at Facebook have not realised this power they soon will.

Chris - you do great work.  I will have more on the socio-comment targeting soon.

I bet there's a large percentage of Facebook users that haven't configured their privacy settings. What if you tell your boyfriend or girlfriend that you're out with friends, but the geolocation data of an uploaded photo gives away your true location?
