More Small Businesses Favor Hiring Online

Hiring online popular among small businesses

The majority of U.S. small businesses (64%) prefer hiring online over the traditional model of hiring onsite, according to a new survey from online employment firm Elance.

These businesses not only favor the online model, 87 percent view it as an important business strategy to improve profitability and competitiveness.

"The majority of businesses report that while they are not adding many new employees onsite, they are opting to hire and distribute work to online teams as a core strategy to help them do more with less," said Ellen Pack, vice president of marketing at Elance.

Eighty-seven percent of businesses identified cost-effectiveness as an important reason for hiring online because there is no need for additional office space, phone lines or computers for each hire.

When asked about the top criteria for hiring professionals online, businesses ranked pay rate as the third most important criteria (73%), citing the ability to access feedback and ratings from prior employers as the most important factor (89%) and viewing a portfolio of work as the second most important factor (84%). Only 19% of those surveyed ranked location as an important factor when hiring online.

Businesses are increasingly building organizations made of both onsite and online distributed workers. Sixty-four percent of businesses plan to hire both onsite and online as the economy improves. The majority (86%) of businesses had made at least one online hire. Nearly half (49%) had made between two and five online hires and 15% had made more than six online hires in the same time period. Only 2% of survey respondents plan to hire exclusively onsite as the economy improves.

Hi, this is Nicole from

Hi, this is Nicole from vWorker (formerly known as Rentacoder). For those who don't know, like Elance, vWorker provides access to programming, writing, illustration, even data entry jobs. It is difficult to take this survey seriously since the only participants were Elance's own users. For a more more informative view, I suggest interested parties consult an objective survey which consults not only non-Elance users, but offline businesses as well. We do not discredit the trend however, as we've seen an increase in outsourcing interests within our own service. But Elance simply does not provide the comprehensive protection package that both employers and workers request these days. I invite everyone to learn more about how Elance operates here: For Buyers: For more details on the above see: https://www.vWorker.com/RentACoder/DotNet/misc/CompetitorInformation/OneOnOneComparisons/ElanceVersusVWorker_ForBuyers.aspx For Workers: http://www.vWorker.com/RentACoder/DotNet/misc/CompetitorInformation/OneOnOneComparisons/ElanceVersusVWorker_ForSellers.aspx If you have any questions, please let me know. You can also call in to talk to a facilitator 7 days a week, or email us.

Interesting info. One thing to keep in mind of course is that the study is done by Elance. It would be nice to know if this was a survey done among Elance's customers or a more general survey. If they're a customer of Elance then obviously you've hired people online before - to state the obvious.

Thanks

I think that this trend will continue to increase once business start to hear about the conveinience and how cost effective online hiring is. This should make it easier to find emplyment as well.

In addition, 52 percent of small business owners believe these tax breaks are likely to help their individual businesses. The HIRE Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on March 18, exempts businesses from paying the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax until December 2010 if they hire people who have been unemployed for 60 days or more.
