Google Launches Site Guide For Small Businesses

Google helps businesses increase their online presence

Google launched today “Getting Started Guide for Google Sites and Google Places,” aimed at helping small business owners increase their presence online and on Google Maps.

The company says creating a Google site for a small business will help potential customers learn more about products, hours and location before they visit a store.

Google says it will help answer customer’s frequently asked questions instead of over the phone.

The Google Small Business Blog offer more details. “With Google Sites, you can easily create a free website for your business. We have site templates that you can choose from, and, within a few minutes, you can create a new website. There are also some quick tips available on how to customize it with images of your business, a map of your location, or a menu.”

“This guide will also show you how to ensure that a listing about your business appears for free when potential customers search for you on Google.com or Google Maps. The listing, which you can quickly and easily create through Google Places, includes basic information like your business name, location, and phone number. You can also edit it at any time with additional details like coupons, customized messages and more to help your business stand out.”

small businesses

It looks like Google has really been putting a lot of energy into helping small businesses lately. They even created a phone number you can call for help with business listings and tags, where you could actually talk to a real person!

Forgive me if I'm not so

Forgive me if I'm not so enthusiastic about Google helping small business.  I recently received an e-mail from Google's Adwords department offering me a free e-mail consultation as I do a lot of pay per click advertising with them.  This so-called consultation was nothing more than an e-mail from them telling me that I should investigate something called the "Opportunities Tab" which I happen to already be familiar with and did not answer my questions.  No follow-up questions and no chance to tell them that their suggestion was irrelevant; just as strictly one-way e-mail.

Some consultation that was.

You get what you pay for..

The same rule still applies. You get what you pay for and free is nice but it does not mean that the client is prepared or has the know how of what's best to place on the site for content, text and SEO.

Yes it's another great tool from Google and it will help many. But, first impressions and efforts to make a website sell takes a professional service otherwise it's not going to get the results they're after.

So many expect that once a website is complete the phone or email is going through the roof.. seen this so many times.

Good luck :)
