Verisign Launches Domain Name Contest

Answer question about opportunities, get $25K

Small business owners who understand the value of a good website (or can at least fake it in a creative, attention-grabbing way) should consider entering a new contest.  Verisign wants to give a fair amount of cash to the owner who can best answer "Where will .com or .net take your business?"

Beginning today, small business owners in the U.S. and Canada can enter the contest ("small business" is defined here as a firm having under 50 employees, by the way).  All it takes is a written entry of between 100 and 300 words, or a video clip lasting between one and three minutes.  Then the winner stands to gain $25,000.

Small business owners overseas aren’t supposed to be kept out of the contest for long, however.  Apparently people in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, and the UK will be able to submit entries starting March 28th.

Verisign intends to accept entries through May 31st, too, so no one should face an especially small window.

Dave Stewart, Vice President of Strategic Partners at Verisign, explained the situation by stating, "Verisign designed the contest to reward creative small businesses that are leveraging the global power of the .com and .net brands, where the world is your domain.  We’re launching this contest today because we want entrepreneurs interested in growing their online business to be creative in telling the world how .com and .net will extend their reach and open a world of opportunities."

Good luck to anyone who decides to participate.

  1. It’s also quite complex, requiring ongoing secure key management and rollover, so I expect the VeriSign service, and competing services, will be quite popular among registrars reluctant to plough money into the technology.
