Windows 7 Release Candidate On The Way

Start deciding if your business will embrace it

Sooner or later, the computers your small business (probably) depends on will die.  But if you’re smart (and/or lucky), you’ll replace them before that happens, and people who aren’t pressed for time will get a good opportunity to take an early look at Windows 7 next week.

Better to find out that Microsoft’s newest operating system isn’t right for your business now than when electrical sparks and strange noises coming from your old PC force you to order a new one, right?  Or better to find out it is before you blow the budget on something from Apple?

So, on May 5th, swing by the Microsoft Download Center and start forming some opinions.  Or at least keep an eye out for reviews if you don’t want to put an additional strain on your current computer.

Microsoft claimed in a formal statement, "With Windows 7, customers will have access to the broadest array of software and hardware options the industry has to offer, and Microsoft is committed to delivering tools and support that enhance software compatibility as well as ease deployment and migration concerns for businesses and consumers alike."

The commercial Windows 7 is supposed to be released during or before January of next year.

  1. Hi Doug,

I’ve put off getting a new computer for a few years now so that I don’t have to go with Vista (XP is just fine). I’ll wait a little bit longer, but it better be worth it! :) Seriously, I hope they get it right this time. Less bells and whistles and more basic stability and power. ~ Steve, trade show giveaways

PS. Are you using XP or Vista?

Hi, Steve. It sounds like we’re in similar boats. I’ve got a seven-year-old Dell stumbling along on XP, so while new gear’s looking necessary, regardless, my fingers are crossed that Windows 7 will be good.

  3. We’ve been running Windows 7 on a few machines at the office and home and apart from one or two small issues it seems to be fantastic! Faster than any of the others so far and requires less resources. I just fear that as they fix a few bugs they might start to go back to the spaghetti of code that XP was beginning to build and that Vista became. I only want the meatballs… no spaghetti please…

    And heck, I’m a vegetarian? ;)

  4. hi Doug,

I think there are a lot of us in that "boat". I hope Windows 7 is a good new boat, and not the Titanic! :) steve, trade show giveaways

  5. I am with both of you Steve and Doug. All my 4 computers are running on XP. I have bought Vista Pro and installed in one of my laptop. Besides the shiny wallpaper on my desktop, nothing else was working right. I cannot even install my most important applications such as Adobe Master Collection CS4.
After two days of giving it a shot, I finally decided to wipe out the hard drive and stick with XP.

My rules of thumbs when it comes to microsof widgets is to always fall 2 years behind. By then those guys will have the time to make all the patches.

I just want my programs to work no matter what OS is installed.
For years I stuck with Windows 98 until XP came along. I wait and see if it’s safe to make a leap to Windows 7 maybe sometimes in 2011. I will give it a try though, just to be informed.
